Details of the "tense" call between Macron and Putin

A French official said President Emmanuel Macron had told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that he had made a "fatal mistake" against Ukraine, that he was deluding himself about the government in Kyiv, and that the war would cost Russia dearly in the long run.

The official said that in the phone call, which he initiated, on Thursday, Putin affirmed his determination to neutralize and disarm Ukraine , whether diplomatically or militarily.

The French president's adviser said: "What President Putin said did not include anything that could reassure us." He added that Putin confirmed his "story" that he seeks to "eliminate the influence of the Nazis in Ukraine."

He reported that Macron told Putin: "You are lying to yourself. This will cost your country dearly, and your country will end up isolated and weak and under sanctions for a very long time."

French President Emmanuel Macron believes that "the worst is yet to come" in Ukraine after his phone conversations with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who expressed his "intention" to continue his offensive, and that the goal of invading Ukraine is to "control" the whole country, according to the Elysee .

During a phone call that lasted for an hour and a half, at the request of the Russian president, Putin told his French counterpart that the operation of the Russian army was developing "according to the scheme" drawn up by Moscow and that it would "exacerbate" if the Ukrainians did not accept its terms, according to the French presidency.

Putin told Macron that his conditions, which Kyiv does not accept through diplomacy, will be imposed through military operations.
