On Friday, a US official spoke of indications that Russian soldiers had left to fight in the ongoing battles in Ukraine, more than a week after Moscow invaded its eastern neighbor.
The US official said, in statements to Al-Hurra TV: "We have indications that Russian leaders and elements have left to fight."
He stressed that fighting is still going on in the city of Kharkiv and that Russian special forces, intelligence agents and hired gangs have entered the city.
Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, experienced a very violent wave of bombing during the first week of the Russian invasion.
The official confirmed the US administration's knowledge of reports indicating the use of cluster bombs by Russia in Ukraine.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine enters its second week, amid reports of violent resistance faced by the invading forces by the Ukrainian army, and of great military losses for Moscow.
The Russians have so far been able to control only the city of Kherson in the south of the country, amid a huge military convoy north of the capital, Kyiv, and desperate attempts to enter the city of Kharkiv.
