Schulz demands an immediate end to the war by Putin, and the latter wants an interview

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to "immediately" stop fighting in Ukraine, during a phone call with him, today, Friday (March 4, 2022). In a statement issued by the German chancellery, Schulz expressed his "great concern.

For several days, terrible scenes and information have been received from Ukraine .” Schulz called on the Russian President to "immediately stop the fighting and allow humanitarian aid to enter the combat zones."

A German government spokesman said Chancellor Schulz had spoken by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and called on Moscow to stop all military action immediately. The spokesman added in a statement that Schulz also called on Putin to allow humanitarian access to the war-affected areas.

For his part, the Russian President announced that a third round of Russian-Ukrainian talks will be held within days, stressing that dialogue is not possible without implementing all Russian demands. In a summary of the call, which came "at the initiative of Germany," the Kremlin said that "Russia is open to dialogue with the Ukrainian side and all those seeking peace in Ukraine, but only on condition that all Russian demands are met ." Putin assured Scholz his desire for Ukraine to become more positive in the upcoming negotiations.

 Planned visit before the war

On the other hand, during his first visit to German forces since taking office, Schulz ruled out the participation of the German army in any way in the war in Ukraine. " We are not part of the ongoing military conflict there and we will not be...The lack of participation of NATO and member states in this war is very clear to us, " Schulz said during his visit to the German Army Operations Command near the German city of Potsdam .

Schulz also stressed that the German government will make all efforts for a ceasefire, adding that every available diplomatic space will be exploited for this.

The chancellor's visit to the German Army Operations Command was planned long before the start of the war in Ukraine. It should be noted that Schulz himself is a "conscientious objector", i.e. against military service, and completed his community service in Hamburg in the mid-1980s.
